Volunteer Story: Meet Lukas!

Where are you from?

I’m from Belgium, Ghent. A country where, together with Holland, we have an organisation to support UPAVIM, it was founded by former volunteers.

Where and what are you studying?

I’m studying at KaHo in Ghent, I am studying engineering (electro mechanics).

What did you do at UPAVIM?

I was a teacher in Reforz. It’s a full-day program where children can come after or before school if they need help with their homework or just need some extra attention. Also, some kids just come to hang out and keep busy playing board games or just by being crazy.

What is your interest in UPAVIM?

I like working in different and sometimes difficult environments. At UPAVIM I found both. The people are in difficult situations but still are capable of making the best out of it.

What were your goals for your time in UPAVIM? Did your goals change?

My main goal was just to help where I could, even if that meant fixing toilets. When I went over, I didn’t really believe I was going to be able to make an impact. That changed over the time I was there; I like to believe.

What was your favorite thing about UPAVIM?

Everything, that sounds like a cliché. But there are so many different crazy things going on that every thing gets a place.
