The UPAVIM Library Needs Your Help!

Dear Friends!

Through your support, the UPAVIM library continues to be a safe and engaging place for kids as well as an invaluable resource for the community of La Esperanza, Guatemala. Last year we were able to raise enough funds to give Viviana, our librarian, a well deserved raise! Our donors are not only bringing the gift of books to Guatemala but also providing good employment to a very dedicated woman. Thank you! Here are a few other highlights.

  • The library is overflowing with kids and books! Janessa was able to visit the library with our nine year old son, Auden, this past May. They brought along two bags full of chapter books in Spanish we found at great prices. Auden especially loved sharing some of his favorite books with the kids, including the complete Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia series. Our book total is currently up to 3904.
  • This year 83 children participated in the summer reading program – up from 67 last year! Through your generosity we were able to send them on a culminating field trip to a beautiful zoo to celebrate all their great work. This was a true treat for the kids!
  • The library is now serving as a resource for more teachers. Teachers from nearby public schools are spreading the word among themselves. More and more teachers are coming in search of books and Viviana is so happy to send them back to their classrooms with bags of books.
  • We will soon be moving into a larger space! UPAVIM’s 4th floor construction has begun, and once it is complete it will provide more space for classrooms, a safe roof-top playground, and a much larger library. Everyone is excited! We are excited to have more space to fill with books and kids and Viviana is dreaming up fantastical new reading nooks.

The 2015 budget for the library is $5244. For this modest amount of money we provide a salary and trainings for Viviana, continue to purchase needed books, and fund an expanded summer reading program. This years budget also includes the purchase of some needed furniture for the new space including tables/chairs, a file cabinet, and more bookshelves. Funding for the library is provided exclusively from donations. We appreciate any amount you can contribute to the library in 2015. You can donate through Paypal or by check.
