“I am a crazy dictionary”- Isai
by Linda Billotti
Isai is a 14 year old boy that I give English classes to twice a week. He is in the 6th grade, with his brother Rudy, because he repeated a grade when he was younger. Isai is one of the sweetest and most talkative kids I have the pleasure of working with. He has school, typing class, Reforz and church every day already and asked if we could have English classes as well.
Isai wants to know about the world; he keeps up with the news, asks all the volunteers as many questions as he can about where they have traveled to and talks about all the places he wants to see in the world. He also has informed me that he would like to be a doctor or work in the medical field and that’s especially why he wants to learn English. He wants to visit and study in the US but then wants to come back and work in Guatemala.
While his pronunciation is pretty rough he works so hard during our classes to learn new things and always wants to know new words. One time he said to me in perfect English “I am a crazy dictionary” because he asks for so much random vocabulary. I really enjoy the two hours a week that I get to spend with Isai. In return for English classes he is trying to teach me how to roll my Rs in Spanish which I think is probably a lost cause.
